The Opal - Tapestry of Mystery and Lore

Pictured is THE VIRGIN RAINBOW - Considered to be one of the world's most beautiful opals, "The Virgin Rainbow" is a 63.3mm Black Crystal Opal Belemnite Fossil in a 'pipe' shape. It Features gem quality color, and is also said to glow in the dark. The Virgin Rainbow weighs in at 72.65 carats, and was discovered at Three Mile Fields, Coober Pedy, South Australia, September 2003 by John Dunstan.

In ancient civilizations, opals were often associated with divine qualities. The Romans believed that opals were a symbol of hope and purity, as they thought the stone embodied the colors of all gemstones. The Greeks linked opals to prophecy and foresight, believing that they bestowed the power of foresight to their owners.

In Australian Aboriginal culture, opals are deeply embedded in creation stories. One popular tale describes how the opal was created when the Creator came down to Earth, leaving a rainbow as a bridge to the heavens. The colors of the opal were said to reflect this rainbow, symbolizing a connection to the spiritual realm.

Opals have often been regarded with a mix of awe and caution. In medieval Europe, they were considered lucky stones, believed to bring protection to those who possessed them. However, during the Victorian era, opals gained a reputation for being unlucky, largely due to the novel "Anne of Geierstein" by Sir Walter Scott, where the opal's misfortunes led to its association with bad luck.

In contemporary metaphysical beliefs, opals are thought to possess various healing properties. They are often associated with emotional balance and creativity, believed to enhance one's imagination and intuition. Some practitioners also view opals as stones that help with emotional healing, providing comfort and support during difficult times.

Opals are not just gemstones; they are vessels of history, culture, and belief. Their enchanting beauty and the myriad of stories surrounding them continue to fascinate gem enthusiasts and spiritual seekers alike, making opals a timeless treasure in both nature and lore.
